Ledger.com/Start — Setup Guide for Your Ledger Wallet

A friendly, colorful walkthrough to get your hardware wallet ready and secure. Read each step slowly — security matters! ✨

Quick Start — 7 Simple Steps

1

Unbox & Inspect

Open your Ledger device and check packaging seals. Only use the cables included and never accept a device that looks tampered with.

2

Install Ledger Live

On your computer or phone, download the official companion app (Ledger Live). Follow the on-screen prompts to add accounts and manage apps on your device.

3

Initialize the Device

Power the device and choose Set up as new device. Create a PIN — choose something memorable but not trivial. Don’t store the PIN digitally.

4

Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

Your device will display a 24-word recovery phrase. Write it down on the provided recovery sheet — do not photograph, copy into apps, or share it with anyone. This phrase is your ultimate backup.

5

Confirm & Verify

Your device will ask you to confirm some words from the recovery phrase to ensure it’s correctly recorded. Complete the verification before proceeding.

6

Install Apps & Add Accounts

Through Ledger Live, install the crypto apps you need (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.), then add accounts. Each account shows an address you can use to receive funds.

7

Receive a Small Test Amount

Before moving large amounts, send a small test payment to a newly generated address and confirm the transaction on the device screen. Once verified, you can transfer larger amounts safely.

Tip: Keep your recovery phrase physical, in a waterproof safe if possible. Consider using a metal backup for maximum durability. Multiple copies in separate secure locations reduce single-point risk.

Security Best Practices

  • Only use official Ledger Live downloads and official device firmware updates.
  • Never share your PIN or recovery phrase with anyone, ever.
  • Beware of phishing: check URLs carefully and type them directly rather than clicking unknown links.
  • Enable a passphrase (advanced users) to add an extra hidden account protection layer.

Troubleshooting

  1. If your device won't connect, try a different cable or USB port and ensure Ledger Live is up-to-date.
  2. If you forget your PIN, you can reset the device and restore from your recovery phrase — but only if you have the phrase.
  3. If you suspect compromise, move funds to a new wallet whose seed you control and which was created on a trusted device.

Accessibility & Support

Ledger Live includes accessibility options and guides. If you need help, consult the official support resources within the app. Keep support interactions strictly on official channels only.
